AI has blown up the Make or Buy equation

For decades, the Make or Buy decision was straightforward: if it's not your core, buy a SaaS. If it is, build it in-house with a team of engineers. AI has blown up the equation: building software is no longer expensive or slow, and the old criteria for choosing between make and buy need rethinking.

On one side, there's the temptation to make everything. Vibe-coding and AI-native IDEs (Claude Code, Cursor…) have drastically reduced the cost of building internal tools. A Product Builder can now prototype a custom workflow tool in a fraction of the time it used to take. The economics seem irresistible: why pay €50k/year for a SaaS license when someone, with the right tool, can build something close enough?
